Jacinta Steeds

Ecologist
Ōtepoti Dunedin📍

Jacinta joined Whirika in January 2023 to lead Communications and Engagement, as well as Ecological Monitoring for Predator Free Dunedin. With a strong background in ecology and a passion for conservation, she works to bridge the gap between science and people, making complex environmental topics accessible and engaging.

Growing up on the edge of Tongariro National Park, Jacinta developed a deep connection to Aotearoa’s native species and landscapes. She has years of hands-on field experience, having volunteered with DOC on projects ranging from native frog research to pest animal monitoring. She also managed social media and communications for the Forest and Bird Dunedin branch while studying.

In her role with Predator Free Dunedin, she led the integration of the NZ Garden Bird Survey and Foliar Browse Index monitoring across the project area, providing a clear, project-wide method to demonstrate the positive impact of predator control on native ecosystems. She also founded and ran the ‘Winter Speaker Series,’ which has become a major annual event. Outside of PFD, she plays a key role in covenant inspections for clients such as Oceana Gold and Wenita – assessing the health of native plants and vegetation in protected areas, identifying threats from weeds and pests.

Outside of work, she enjoys playing guitar and bass, attending live music events, tramping, reading, creative writing, and various forms of environmental and social activism.
