Solis Norton

Senior Environmental and Biophysical Systems Specialist
Ōtepoti Dunedin📍

Solis joined the Whirika team in 2023, bringing with him two distinct, yet complementary areas of expertise: one in biophysical economics, the other in agriculture, supply chains, data systems, and modelling.

He is passionate about creating vibrant, resilient communities and systems that can navigate the realities of biophysical resource depletion. His work often explores the intersection of ecology and economy - examining how resources flow through landscapes, communities, and industries, and how these systems can be reshaped to support long-term wellbeing.

His recent project work spans energy return on investment, catchment management planning, and local food systems. Highlights include leading the development of a catchment management plan for Te Hakapupu / Pleasant River, resulting in livestock exclusion from waterways, restoration of fish passage, and the planting of over 90,000 native trees. He also assessed the viability of a micro abattoir-based food system focused on feral deer harvesting - combining ecological management with social impact by training rakatahi in hunting and butchery, and supporting local food banks.

Outside of work, Solis enjoys hunting, martial arts, gardening, creating good food, and raising his daughter.
