Liz joined us in 2019 as a communicator and project coordinator, applying her skills and 17 years of experience in conservation communications, community engagement, and ecology to projects including The Halo Project, Predator Free Dunedin, Drone Seedpod Trials, and later, Dream South D.

Previously, Liz worked worked with the Department of Conservation across Otago, Southland, and Northland in roles involving conservation advocacy, weed surveillance and management, and collaborative work with landowners, iwi, community groups, and NGOs.

Liz loves contributing her practical skills and passion for native species - especially plants - and natural habitats to the wide range of innovative and sustainable biodiversity projects that Whirika is involved in. In 2025, she produced a weed management plan for the Aramoana/Heyward Point area and continues to work on trials for reforesting land using seedpods dispersed via drones. She is also involved in a variety of biodiversity enhancement, restoration, and ecological monitoring projects.

Currently, she’s especially enjoying work with OceanaGold Ltd to help restore shrublands at Macraes.

Outside of work, Liz stays busy raising two very active boys, and cultivating native plant gardens and wild spaces.
