Lloyd is a founding director of Whirika, bringing over 15 years of experience in energy management, bioenergy, and industrial decarbonisation. As a direct descendant of Māui-tikitiki a Taranga, it is no surprise that Lloyd was always interested in fire and the energy of the sun. Since graduating with a degree in Energy Studies from the University of Otago in 2006, Lloyd has worked at the forefront of sustainable energy solutions across Aotearoa.
A recognised leader in wood biomass energy, Lloyd works with government and industry to decarbonise process heat systems – helping clients move away from fossil fuels through practical, cost-effective alternatives. He has worked extensively with forest owners and wood processors in Southland and Otago to assess the feasibility of using forestry residues for energy, and regularly advises central government (including EECA) on the role of biomass in New Zealand’s low-carbon future.
Lloyd’s work is grounded in mātauranga, innovation, and a deep commitment to sustainability. He brings his Māui-tanga, or ability to innovate, into every project. Whether it’s decarbonisation planning, energy efficiency, or leading systemic change, Lloyd works closely with clients to turn bold ideas into practical, lasting solutions.
Lloyd’s recent work includes: Supporting Prime Range Meats to develop a comprehensive carbon profile and energy efficiency roadmap, securing $350,000 in GIDI funding to implement fuel switching and process heat upgrades; and Leading a biomass feasibility study for SolTuna in the Solomon Islands, demonstrating that locally sourced biomass could replace diesel boilers and reduce long-term operating costs - enabling the client to proceed to detailed investment planning.
Outside of work, Lloyd can often be found in or around the ocean around the Otago coastline – surfing, diving, and enjoying time with his kids. When he isn’t surfing or diving with his kids, he is learning te reo Māori and spending quality time with his family.
